Decking question(s)...

First time making a deck.

Weeds under the deck:
1) it is recommended to use Landscape Fabric under the deck to prevent weeds? My deck is on grass.

Gate:
2) I purchased an aluminum gate for the deck that has the ability to be resized.

On the deck, so far I have two deck posts (4x4x4) screwed in but can be moved. The aluminum gate is 36" but the gap that I need for the gate is 32" presently.

It is better :

a) to move deck posts to ensure a gate fits exactly out of the box?
b) to cut the gate to fit the the gap between the deck posts already in place?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome back, David.

Since this thread is about something other than tile or related to tile, I moved it over here to the Mud Box. If you plan to tile over the deck, we can move it back.

If the area under the deck would be closed off with no access, I would put down a weed barrier or plastic and set something on it to keep it down. If you have access, you might want to cut the grass regularly, or cut it once and use a herbicide to keep the grass from growing back.

As for the gate, do you need the full 36"? If so, move the post. If not, adjust the gate. What I would do other than just screw the post in place is to make it longer so that it extends below the deck and anchor it directly or indirectly to the framing below. Otherwise the weight of the gate will cause it to lean over time.

Thank you.

Yes the post is already anchored to the JOIST and boxed in with other pieces of PT wood to give it a secure placement.
The area below the deck is less than 10 inches at certain points and about 2 feet at others, so I cannot really get up to do any lawn maintenance.

You got any small children that can run a weed eater?

If it were mine, I'd probably hit it with Roundup a couple of times a year to keep the weeds down, and the snakes from hiding in there. I know some don't like to use chemicals like that, and in that case I'd use a weed barrier. Even then, you have the potential for critters to get underneath it.

Strings and stairs...

I am going to add a set of stairs to the deck, but the height is only about 14 inches from the ground. Any ideas how I would go about doing this for such a short distance? How many steps?

You need only one step, David. How is a matter of how you've constructed the deck and what you want it to look like.
