The rattler was a young one, maybe a year old. About two feet and no discernible rattles yet. That's the scary part. Folks don't see rattles and assume incorrectly. Young rattlers will strike somewhat indiscriminately so it's better to discriminate.

Levi, tough call. Multiple deadly type critters or snow.

and we have some deadly critters here too. Bears can be, mountain lions are no joke, and I HATE black widows - well all spiders for that matter. Want to hear me scream like a little girl, point out a spider.

only 2 snakes that are hard to tell apart are the Scarlet Kingsnake and the Coral Snake.
but can be identified by the red, yellow and black colored banding separations and a easy rhyme to remember,...
"red touches yellow kill a fellow" - Coral Snake
"red touches black ok Jack" - Kingsnake

Brian,

Thanks for the info. But if I am close enough to the snake to see the scales on its face..... its too late.

not really, a snake (aggressive one) can only leap forward 1/3 the length of its body.
so getting close to see its eyes are easy unless your slow and clumsy.

In Australia, We just assume that they are all poisonous.
When walking in the bush, keep an eye on when your stepping and make lots of noise.
You will probably never see one.

This is a good thing to know, Brian, but I'd really like for you to come with me and 'splain that to some of the more aggressive BlackTailed rattlers (green rattlesnake) I find regularly out in southern New Mexico. I'll hold your hat and stand over here to take pichers, eh?

Some of them boogers is, well, mean as a snake, seems like. Attack rattlers, them are, I swear.

Never have had any difficulty identifying the Coral Snakes hereabouts, and we got lots of'em. Caught one was most of 30" long few years back. Boone & Crockett size for them things as I unnerstan it. Pretty, too.
