renovate old tub into large shower area.

hi,
i am taking out an old tub and want to put in a large shower only area. when i started peeling off the old 3x3 tiles, the wall board behind it tore in spots.
1. should i take all the old wall board down and replace with wonderboard or sometning?
2. since there was a tub before, do i put in the membrane and cement "pan" for the shower area?

thanks for any help!

Aloha Margaret and welcome to the Forum.

Yes and yes to your questions. Remove all the old wallboard w/tile and for the shower you can put up a vapor barrier and cement board (like Wonderboard). And for the pan, you will need cement based mud pan with liner.

A good place to start learning about the construction process in this thread in our liberry. http://johnbridge.com/vbulletin/show...&threadid=5434

Come back with any more questions you may have....we'll be right here to help you all the way through your project.
