tile and weight bearing?

I am looking to replace carpet in home with tile. I have a concrete slab. I have a baby grand piano and was told that I need to make sure the tile would support the piano and not mar the floor.

I know that I can't use engineered wood and oak is very expensive, especially right now, so I am hoping that ceramic tile is the answer.

Can you help?

Hi Sharon,

Properly installed porcelain tile will support it, but I would recommend changing the wheels to hard rubber. The typical small metal casters are not good.

What is critical on ANY tile floor install, is to ensure you get good coverage and properly set the tile...voids and large point loads are not good for any brittle panel, but properly supported, a good porcelain should be fine. You probably wouldn't want to use a bisque ceramic tile, but a good porcelain is much stronger and you may not want a glazed one.
