Some installers will paint a membrane over the cement board that they nailed to the curb. That, or dab a little on the nail heads. This may slow down the water a little but the water will make it's way around the nails and back under to the nail holes in the wood. We know this because we see it over and over in the showers we tear out. If you're going to have a pan liner system, the proper way is to bend lath over the curb and fasten it on the outside only. Then mud the curb with wall mud. That's one of the first questions I would ask your new installer. If they say they plan to nail cement board on the curb, strike him off your list and move on to the next guy.
