kerdi cost

Hey all
Mac here.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me a the apporx. cost of the kerdi system.
I just got done doing my preslope, have installed a 2 part drain, so i wont need the kerdi one.
However i am interested in lining the shower walls and the bench, of course the pan liner too.

Hi Mac

For the system to work, you need to use their drain. At this point, you have a couple of choices to make.

1. Install a pan liner to utilize your clamp on drain, and waterproof your bench. What do you have on the walls?

or,

2. Remove the clamp on drain, and prepare for the Kerdi drain (including adding to preslope the final mud).

As far as pricing, you can go to the following website:

kerdi pricing

thanks for the reply.
I have put up durock on the walls, bench top and back, but not the front yet as i have not installed a liner.
what would be the best to do about water proofing the bench?
I did build a 1/4 on 12 slope into the bench.
thanks for any help with this as it is the first time.
You know what they say a bout first time's. Casr of beer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah forgot, before installing the durock I hung 6 mill plastic over the wall studs down to the top of my blocking( for the liner), then hung the durock over it.
Havent taped and mudded the joints yet but that's coming.
Do I need do to anymore to the walls before i thinset on the tiles?

Mac, I wouldn't be putting up any tile till you decide which way you want to do the liner. Like John said above, a regular PVC liner could be used with your drain but would need to go behind the Durock. The Kerdi system could be used and installed over the Durock before putting up the tile but their drain would need to be used.

What John and Davy said.

Better slow down and make some decisions before you get much further ahead of yourself, Mac. No sense having to tear out work you've already done because you missed a step.

Have you read the information on Shower Construction in our Liberry? I think it would help you get your procedures in the proper order.

My opinion; worth price charged.

cross roads, kerdi/oatey liner

Thanks guys.
I have read the articles and postings.
Allot of info here and its all good.
But i do beleive that i read that I could use a combination of kerdi for the walls and bench to seal everything, and still use the vinyl liner? I am totally messed up here?
Oh and believe me im not laying a single tile till i am sure of a water barrier, for all of this expensive lumber.
I mean from what i saw, one could run the kerdi down the walls to the edge of the durock just as it terminates that 1/2-3/4" above the liner, no?
I am not fighting this, just figuring in my head hown to combine the both.
I have constructed an non standard shower so the pan won't work.
any help or thoughts are worth a BIG THANKS. First time for me and tile and showers.
I have built plenty of walls and floors and now specialize in custom cabinets, tiling and waterproofing a BIG different animal, just a bit on the scary side. AS i have seen what water does, over and over.
ill try for some pictures.

Hi Mac

Is there poly on the interior wall over the bench?

I would lean toward using the vinyl liner, since you have started Durock. You need to remove the Durock from the curb wrap and bench top 1st. I would also remove the Durock from the wall above the bench, to get the liner to wrap 6" above bench and 6" past the face of the bench. The Durock can then be trimmed slightly and reinstalled later.

If you use Kerdi, besides redoing the drain, adhereing to the Durock walls is a little tougher than over drywall (as the moisture would be sucked out of the thinset quicker).

poly under bench

No poly under bench seat durock.
Should I?
Do i need to wrap the vinyl up the bench face and the seat and up the back, or just up from the floor 6".
Not understanding why to remove the bench seat durock.
THe durock that is on the wall by the bench is 7" from the bench seat right now.
How much proctection is needed for the bench?

liner

How would i put the durock on the front(leg/calve area) with puncturing the liner if i was to wrap the liner up the bench seat and back.
Im so confused, my heading is swimming, lol

Hi Mac,

I recommend poly behind the Durock on the bench wall, and hopefully the back wall poly can overlap it. The bench needs mucho protection. If not done properly, it is destined to fail.

poly and liner

Ok i wrap the bench back, seat, and front with poly.
What wouid be the next step?
1. Install durock, then maybe a liquid sealer?

2. Vinyl liner, but then how would I install it on the bench without puncturing it. Imean would you wrap it all the way up the front, seat and the back?

Mac, you've hit upon one of the big problems with wood-framed benches and the reason for the concept of the "monument" bench built entirely within the confines of the waterproof pan: There ain't no good way to run that pan up the front of the wood bench and then cover it with a tiling substrate.

If you elect to use the PVC pan, I think you need to cut the plywood from the bottom of your bench (to a level at least three inches above your curb) to allow for the liner and its necessary folds. You'd install blocking just as you did in your walls. Then you can put your CBU down over it just as you will on the walls, allowing your deck mud to secure it at the bottom. I wouldn't worry about polly in the bench area because you're gonna hafta use a surface waterproofing over the outside of the whole bench area anyway. A barrier behind the wall above the bench would provide no place for the water to go except into the wall cavity anyway.

And I agree with John K about the curb. If you're gonna use a vinyl pan, you'll need to remove the CBU from the curb or be prepared to make it a lot larger by adding the liner, lath, and mud.

Or....you could just remove the CBU you have up (or not) and replace it with sheetrock and cover the whole of it with Kerdi, including the floor. You'd need to cut out the existing drain and replace it with the Kerdi drain, but then you could Kerdi over your existing pre-slope and curb and be finished with it.

My opinion; worth price charged.

remove durock

OK so if i remove all the durock, Chalk it up to learning phase, install sheet rock to wall. in prep of kerdi
would i then still remove plywood at face of bench and block it. or is that not necessary with kerdi?
ANd I guess that i would just drape the entire area with the kerdi sheets cuting and pasting to include the entire bench?
will it be a problem to retro install the kerdi drain since i have already presloped?
