Kerdi Application Question

Hey Guys, Good Morning,

A couple questions for you pro's before I take on my tub suround. I'm now seriously considering Kerdi instead of traditional CBU method.

1. In everything I have read I am to stick the Kerdi directly to my sheetrock using UN-MODIFIED thinset - is this correct?

2. If I use UN-MODIFIED thinset sticking the Kerdi to sheetrock then, do I still use a LATEX MODIFIED thinset over the top of Kerdi to stick my tiles too? If so why unmodified in underneath Kerdi area and modified on top? I'm confused.

3. Should I use a sanded or non-sanded grout after tile installation? I have not decided on a tile yet, but hopefully someone can still answer this? Tile spacing will be 1/8".

Thanks Guys,
Torrey

Kerdi will not be warrantied if you use a modified thinset but from what ive read here it wont harm it. I just finished my shower using a complete Kerdi system and used Megabond un-modified thinset by Laticrete under the kerdi and over the kerdi for the tiles and had no problems, and it does not leak.

As for grout, i had a 3/16 " spacing and used unsanded grout inside the shower and sanded outside the shower and it worked fine, but you may want to hear from a pro on this question.

Good luck on your project.

Hi Torrey,

Jeremy has given you sound advice. Another good non-modified thin set is Ditra-set, if you can locate it. I use VersaBond, also. VersaBond is modified and does void the Kerdi warranty, but it works.

Can I buy VersaBond at my local home-box store? Any idea of where to find Ditra-set?

VersaBond is sold by Home Depot. Don't know where you might find Ditra-set in Alabama. It's made by Bostik, though.
