Concrete box out drain/p-trap question

Hello All - this is my first post!

I have search the forum and found some similar posts but not quite the same. With the current environment, I have taken the opportunity to do some DIY and remodel the smallest shower. After I stripped the older neo angle shower pan, I noticed that there is a concrete box out with plumbing and p-trap which appears to be common in California. I have a schluter neo angle shower pan and will need to fill up the hole in order to have support. Is the best option to fill this hole with sand? Any help or guidance is much appreciated, thanks!

Hi Bel,

Looks like you've got room to re-locate the drain pipe before you fill the space. Use deck mud to refill it. Here's a short article:

Thanks John for the reply. The drain is in the exact place i need it, just need to trim off about two inches for the schluter drain to connect then the tray. If I re-located the drain, wont the same problem persist? I will still have the p-trap and drain in the hole i need to fill. Sorry if its a silly question was just hoping this would be easier, sigh...
