I have PEX throughout my house but I am tied in to a copper line that is 3' from ground to in the house no insulation around it and the crawl space didn't really feel that cold but during the real cold days I was out pushing snow and had enough water in the lines to keep the dogs water bowls full. I went about 3 days without a shower which might as well have been a month for me. I take a shower every morning and evening no matter what.


I know I am have gotten soft and pampered in my older years cause I can remember in the Corps being in the field for months at a time and washing up with water from a canteen and baby wipes. Yes baby wipes, I always packed them and a couple of rolls of Charmin. MRE toilet paper is the worst, might as well wipe your ass with a leaf or a clod of dirt

The big problem here is not how the plumbing it done but the failure of our power grid. When people are without power for days and temps are way below freezing, pipes WILL freeze.

I ran PEX when I built this house, and I made sure all the supply piping was inside the insulation, but it froze after the power had been off for a while. Took a couple days to get the water running after the power came back on. I was luck and only lost the on-demand water heater that is mounted in an outside wall. A new will be be here tomorrow.
