Shower remodel

Hi.....newbie here.....I am remodeling a shower and want to use Kerdi. I have gutted the old shower and the drain is way taller than I think we could get away with. The lady is a little older and would like a shorter, and thinner curb. The original curb was 3-2x4's one on top of the other. I would like to use maybe a 2x2. Possible? Also the drain looks to be about 3 inches off the concrete floor. Could it be changed and lowered to use a Kerdi drain with out too much trouble? Also, she wants to have a sliding shower door on top of the curb. The shower area is about 3'x5'. Could a 2x2 curb work with a shower door if I could get the drain lowered?

Hi, how about a name?

A curb built like your old one is pretty standard. I suppose you could go a bit smaller in both dimensions but I wouldn't be comfortable at all with 2x2 (which you probably mean built from 1.5" x 1.5" lumber.) For strength considerations I would reduce the height before I would reduce the width, which is probably "the lady's" main concern.

Regarding your drain, pictures would be most helpful. Your drain can probably be lowered, you will probably have to remove some concrete around the drain any event to adapt to the Kerdi system.

Finally, most sliding shower doors are pretty thin (2" or so) so they would work on a thinner curb, but again I wouldn't reduce the curb width much.

I just reread John's Kerdi ebook, and he makes curbs out of a single 2x4, so I don't suppose a 2x2 would be a problem. I would make sure your tiles and shower door will accomodate whatever thickness you choose for the finished curb.

You need more height. By the time you put in your preslope, Kerdi, thinset and tile, there won't be a curb..
Why is it you feel you need to keep the curb to a minimum?
