they do not like the fact that there are two equally sized and cut tiles on either side of the wall that faces the camera. The tiles are and were laid out like so (by me) so that the grout joints would line up with the smaller rectangular floor tiles. They think that the tiles should be like the wall on the left. Does this warrant a re-do? There was no drawing and no preference was stated before the fact, as well i had only gone half way up the wall one day and it was not until that wall was almost done that they mentioned it, three days after starting that wall. Also, the tiles are very straight which is hard to make out in this picture, and there is little to no lippage, so it does not look sloppy in any way.

Well,the tile is suppsed to be centered so you have equal cuts either side larger than a 1/2 cut,technically.

Yes, you want the cuts on the outer edge to be bigger than half. You should have moved the center tile over by a half tile.

would you re-do this? would you say to the client 'i'll re-do this at no added cost' or would you say 'i will re-do this for an added cost'? I'm trying to figure out what i should do.

so what you are saying is, they want the left wall cuts to look like the right wall cuts ?
the only way that could be done is if both walls are the same lenght.
and they would have told you at least how they wanted it.

I myself always go over a rough layout with the homeowner when I do a remodel.
to each is own.

if they didnt tell you how they wanted it, it would be up to the tile setter to decide which layout would fit the area. I myself center the back wall (*either a grout joint or center the tile) so I have a big peice as the cut on each end, then wrap the wall with the peice I cut off, (saves waste) continuing that to the next wall doing the same until I get to the door opening where it ends there at the bullnose.

if your work isn't sloppy and they didnt direct you to set it a perticular way, I wouldnt tear it down unless they were paying. your the artisan !

personaly guy's//to wrap the tiles around the corner is the correct method..but.. unless it looks good to the eye then put a bigger cut to follow..as they say in the UK what looks good to the eye is right to the customer..just a thought.. .....dave....hello and welcome from me..

I Agree with Brian center the back wall then use cut pieces to continue next wall. If the home owner is around I always involve them with any steps that may cause an issue. If they had a day to look at it and said nothing until it was done then i would think that they should pay for the redo

thanks for weighing in on this, people. The customer was actually quite rude about the whole thing. Everytime i have a design related question, they always roll their eyes and say 'does this have to be decided now?' or i have to make an appointment for in the morning before work, or after work. It's kind of hard to put these questions off for a later time when you have alot of pressure to finish and get the hell out of their house and are paying a labourer to help you and you want to get them going on the saw, making cuts. Somethings' gotta give.

I usually ask the customer if they want to leave it to my discretion if they cannot or will not make a decision and let them tactfully understand that once it's done, it's done no turning back. That will usually get them to make a decision, and cover your rear end if they don't. Have not had much trouble with customers though.
