What size notch for Raimondi leveling system?

Hey guys. I'm about to finish the last 400sf of my basement on a slab with no decoupling membrane. Its prepped and level. The first 600sf I used a 3/8 notch and did not use a leveling system. I was proud of it 4 years ago, but now I recognize the flaws and it looks terrible. I'm going to do it right this time. I have the Raimondi system with red clips. My buddy told me I need to use a 1/2" notch. Is this correct? If so, I'll have to float the first row that butts up against the existing tile, but if that's what it takes, that's what I shall do. They are 12x12s with a straight lay pattern. I plan to use 1 clip per side in the center and may use some leave in spacers on the corners at least for the first couple rows. I'll be using a laser as well for the first row. Thanks

Hi Mike,

If you’re only going to use 1 clip per side (in the center), I’d rather skip the clips altogether.

Before going much further, can we ask about what’s the shiny coating on the slab? And it looks like you’ve got at least a couple cracks, as well?

I'm wondering if your friend is suggesting a 1/2 notch trowel because the plastic bases of the leveling system are too thick?

I would typically start with a 3/8 trowel for 12x12s.

Also, it's a common misconception that leveling clips make your floor flat. The way to have a flat tile floor is to have a flat floor to lay the tile on.
