3D Stone and Tile Backers - Ceramic Tile Advice Forums

I thought it was time for a thread about the new backers that are about to hit the market. I have been fortunate to spend a lot of time talking with my friend and local Mad Scientist Rod Katwyk as he played around with this idea and it's really cool to see it taking hold and actually being sold. I was able to get my hands on some of the prototype backers a while back and much more recently some of the first production grade ones for this fireplace renovation.
I see endless design possibilities with these and have already sold my 2nd job using the 3D backers to create a one of a kind look for a client. Any material becomes totally customizable and I think that will sell. There can be really good money in the up sell with this custom look.

Anyway, just showing some support for Rod and what he brings to the industry and hopefully others will post pics, reviews, pros and cons etc. here as they start using this product.

Nice looking results and great product design. Of course it peaked my interest but Rod needs to include a how-to video too. For an exorbitant price for sure, but it would be worth it.

Just super stuff coming out of Utah. Wow.

I am weeks away from having a video that will not only show and explain the product but will also serve as a sales tool to the tile installer as he or she explains to their clients the options available to create a 3D look.

I can't wait to see the ways these backers are used once they get in some of your hands.

This product was made by a tile setter for tile setters.
Check out the high prices and limited choices out there for 3D stone and tile.
Now the tile person can create this look themselves out of virtually any material.

If we all keep the price close to the 3D tile prices today but offer more choices we won't devalue this niche market.

I'd love to give this a try. What thicknesses are offered?
Also as another idea... I use 1/8 wedi board to build out listello rows when the thickness does match the field tile but in some cases this doesn't work. The wedi costs me $20 for a 2x4 sheet how would pricing compare?

Here are some standard sizes I stock.
The price will be somewhere in line with similar backer boards like the one you mentioned.
It's a little early for me to post prices because we may sell these direct to a distributer.
I am able to give out samples however. Enough for people to do a small install.
Let me know the sizes you want and I'll send you some.

This is a wedged chevron design.
It was created by first by installing the 12"x12" wedged backer onto the backs of 12"x12" polished and honed travertine.
I like to use Laticrete 254 rapid setting thin set to stick the backers on the backs of the tile which allows me to start cutting the tile into strips after only a few hours.
Once the material is cut the actual install goes very quick.
No stressing out about lippage.

With these backers the design possibilities are endless.
