Is my shower drain missing something? - warning - gross picture of my drain

My wife hates our shower drain.

I've always wondered whether it's missing a part -- it seems odd that there are so many grooves for gunk to collect.

Any input?

Ew.

Agreed though, just not a good design.

To be fair, Justin, they all need cleaning to some extent every now and then.
