Fill in a sunken shower

Hello MLBZ521

I'm remodeling a sunken shower here in Florida. The house is on a concrete slab, and the shower is sunken into the slab. It has two different elevations, which is to say you step down once into the shower, turn left, then stop down again to get into the heart of the shower where you actually use it.

The dimensions are 70" L x 35" W x 10" D. I'm thinking of just extending the drain and pouring concrete with no rebar.

What are your thoughts and what did you end up doing?

Welcome, Frank.

I moved your post from the other visitor's old project thread to prevent confusion in both places. A moderator can give your thread a more generic title any time you'd like to suggest one.

You certainly can fill in your shower floor as you suggest, but my first question would be, "Why?"

If you really want to do that, though, I'd recommend you use a mortar commonly called deck mud or floor mud or dry-pack. Much easier to shape for your new sloped shower floor.

How have you planned to waterproof the new shower receptor?

My opinion; worth price charged.

Hi Frank,

Yes, use deck mud to fill in the hole. You can use broken concrete blocks to build it up a little.
