Removing freshly set tiles over ditra

Been setting over ditra for years and happened to think of this the other day.

In the rare case I’m installing ditra and setting tile same day, if I need to remove a freshly set tile, I’ll slide it an inch or two before lifting up. Don’t want to break bond between ditra and substrate.

Much more common is me installing ditra one day, then setting the next day. At which point it’s just my regular MO…stick my margin trowel under the tile edge and lever the sucker straight up.

Other people doing the same as me? Or you all doing the slide / lift over ditra all the time?

Hi Lou. Even though the thinset may be set enough, I probably wouldn't lift straight up until the thinset dries a few days, just to be safe.

I slide the tile several inches to the open side while lifting gently.

I never install over fresh Ditra. It's just a rule I have for myself.

give the tile an tap with the hammer and smash into pieces, then there's less area pulling up when you lift the broken pieces.
