Tiling over asphalt driveway

I know this is probably a pipe dream but I'm wondering if there are any advancements in Ditra type underlayment (that can handle the weight) or thinset that make it possible to lay outdoor porcelain tile over an asphalt driveway without having to remove the asphalt and prep a substrate as you would have to do with pavers. I want to upgrade from asphalt but am not crazy about pavers.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer but much of what I found on google was from years ago and I thought maybe there is something out there more recently that would make it work.

Asphalt is more like a thick liquid than a solid...I'm sure you've seen ruts in the stuff caused by weight and exacerbated when it's hot and the stuff softens. Plus, thinset probably won't bond to it all that well, either.

None of the membranes can handle vertical movement. Don't think it will work for you. Tile can't handle vertical movement, either.

Hi Dan. I don't know of anything myself. I don't think tile would hold up very well over asphalt. My dad use to say that tile is only as good as what's behind it. It's only a pretty surface.

Many years ago we tiled a couple driveways in California. They were over concrete. If the concrete cracks, so does the tile.

If you can stand the additional height, you might get pavers on a sand bed to work over the asphalt. To get things a bit lower, you could have some of the surface ground down. That could be problematic, though, as it would have to be sloped so it could drain.
