Repair New Glass Tile Installation

Guys

Last night at about midnight I finished my first tile installation (of any kind). I installed a mosaic glass tile backsplash above the countertop in our kitchen. The tiles are 2" x 1" in the offset "brick."

This morning, on closer inspection, I've found probably 4 or 5 tiles in the ~30 sq ft of backsplash which are loose. Mostly places where I fudged with the alignment a little too later or where I failed to get a good layer of thinset under the edges, etc. (I think this emoticon is appropriate now: )

Trying to figure out what my next move is:

1) Leave them and try to caulk over them - when the caulk dries it should hold them to the other tiles, right? Several of them are still attached to the mesh "backing" so I can't see them going anywhere...

2) Try to peel them out without disconnecting other tiles and stick them back up with some 2-part epoxy or liquid nails or something else before I grout.

3) Try to work some hot glue or silicon in between the loose tiles and their surrounding tiles to stabilize before grouting.

4) Something else entirely...

Advice would be welcome. I'm not really game to chisel the whole thing off the while for a few loose tiles so I need to figure something out.

Thanks in advance!

Russ,

Welcome to the forum.

A- Use a razor to cut around the offending tiles to separate the backing mesh

B- scrape out any thinset

C- apply new thinset

D- install tile using tape or spacers to hold it in place

E- Read the grouting tutorial then the caulking tutorial

Thanks Paul - the tutorials are very helpful. I've read through them and printed off for reference. It's always tough to find good stuff like that amidst the wash of hastily-written and poorly-worded posts!

I think we should be able to get the tiles out as you suggest (cutting the mesh), but I was wondering -- will the thinset need to wait another 16 hours to dry for those individual tiles? Or might we be able to grout over them sooner?

I realize that may sound foolishly impatient but I'd like to get the project done this weekend. Otherwise I may get in trouble with "the boss" as her kitchen would be torn apart all week.

I'd skip the waiting period and grout as soon as the tiles were firm enough not to move. DO wait about a week to seal the grout as with glass tiles the curing process can take much longer than usual

Use a good sealant such as Miracle 511.

Paul

Just wanted to thank you so much for all the help. Got 'er finished and I think it looks nice (tried to attach a couple shots here). Pretty happy with my first tile installation.

The grouting instructions were very useful -- and the wife is happy. Seems like a successful weekend to me!

Why would you care if the DishWasher was happy?
