There is no need for clips or screws of any kind. Simply use commonly available glass shims under the glass panels.

1- Set two glass shims perpendicular to the panel to be set.
2- Set glass panel
3- Trim glass shims flush with the face of the glass panel
4- Apply clear silicone to the base of the panel
5- Stand back and admire your work for the next 24 hours while the silicone cures.

The response to installer number 2 should be:

"Correction, you've been doing it WRONG for 20 years, and you have either gotten extremely lucky, or have had the good fortune that your mistakes have not made the showers fail soon enough that the customer comes back to you."

Number 1 is your guy, simply because he understands waterproofing, and will either do it correctly himself, or make sure that his workers do. Compared to the other guy, his attitude is also a lot better. As soon as someone plays the expert card, you know you're in a dangerous place. "I'm an expert" is BS. "Here's why I do it this way" is the correct, non-hack attitude.

Unfortunately, a good reputation from people who don't actually know what good work consists of is not really worth much. He has nothing but false authority. Sure, the tile might look great and the system might last a few years, but it has cancer from day 1 as soon as that waterproofing system is compromised.
