Fastening through heated tile floor

Does anyone know of a way to locate heating wires under an existing tiled floor? Many under tile heating manufacturers mention systems for finding faults; I need to locate wires in a functioning heated floor, so that a partition can be installed over it without messing it up

If your friends with an energy auditer or a fireman, you might have access to a thermal imaging camera. This would be the best way, I'd think.

Is there a way to attach the partition with adhesive or by other means than mechanical attachment ?

There was something here but is no longer available

I think you may have a bigger problem. It's not a good idea to bury heating cables under a bottom plate. I would check with the manufacturer of the heating cable.

I believe most only allow you to come within a certain distance of a wall or cab, let alone under it.

my zircon stud finder senses current. dont know if it will sense that through tile though. can always buy it at HD and if you dont like it take it back.

Thats also what I remember reading from my install instructions, nothing can be placed over the wires as it cause them to over heat.

What Greg said.

IF you put a wood sill plate & partition directly over a heated tile floor you'll likely create a hot spot and may burn out the heat, in addition to voiding any warranty.

I'd call the heat manufacturer and run your plan by them before going any farther.

Lots of good ideas - thanks. It may just be a crazy notion anyway, even having mapped out the wire locations, there will still be a risk of messing up. I think I know what manufacturers will say!

I need to fasten the bottom plate down at least at the door; but maybe using adhesive plus dowels that extend no further than the depth of the tile would work well enough for a light door.

I did wonder about the overheating issue - but the wires are more than an inch down under stone tiles and slu, and the slab is not insulated. Maybe steel framing would help limit the hot-spot.
