First Shower Build

Hi I'm new to this forum and to ceramic tile installation. I will be building my first ceramic tile shower and am currently researching the Kerdi and Wedi systems. My first question is on water supply lines. What is the typical wall thickness after backerboard thinset and tile? Do most plumbers leave a female thread inset in the wall to thread a brass nipple into after the tile is complete or do they put the nipples in prior to tiling? I'm using Moen products and the instructions for the body spray give a tolerance of 1/2" to 5/8" protusion from the finished wall surface.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome aboard, Doitall. Please give us a first name.

For the shower head you use an "eared" ell inside the wall. You screw in a temporary half-inch pipe nipple with a cap on it. After tiling and grouting you will remove the temporary nipple, the "stub out" and replace it with a nipple of the correct length for your fixture. Here is a picture of the eared ell with the temporary nipple screwed into it.

Hi Dave, you hafta know what your tile thickness is and the sheeting (CBU or drywall if using Kerdi) before you set the valve. There should be a plate that is on the valve that shows you where to set it to the finished wall .
