Question on tiling a gas fireplace

Hi folks, my name is Mike. I'm in the last stages of building a new house and this board has really been helpful for our tile projects. I have a question about building a tile surround for our gas fireplace that I just couldn't find much info on anywhere.

In our family room we have a zero-clearance fireplace from Lennox. It is surrounded by drywall and has around 8-12" of metal, 36" wide covering the flue at the top. We want to set some travertine in a hearth below it (on CBU) and up the walls around and above it up to the mantle. I have 1/2" wonderboard installed on the floor for the hearth to match up to the hardwood floor. Here's my questions:

- What should I use to tile over the metal on top of the fireplace? I was planning on just using thinset over the drywall on the sides, but thinset won't work on the metal - will it? Should I use epoxy or something like that?

- Do I need to use anything special with regards to the heat the fireplace will generate, or will just standard modified thinset work around the fireplace?

For clarification, we're using 12" tumbled travertine tiles.

Thinset will work fine for the tile on drywall. Heat will not be a problem.
To stick tile onto the metal use epoxy or silicone.
Good Luck
