building out the tub apron by furring it out and then tiling it?

You know that apron on a typical standard tub that goes down to the floor? It's part of the tub that I would like to have furred out with wood framing and then tiled over. I'd furr it out no more 3.5 inches using 2 x 3's. Has anyone tried this and had success in changing the look of the tub? Any pictures I can get links to?

I've never done anything like that, but if you can get the short wall sufficiently anchored against movement I see no reason why it wouldn't work. Sealing the joint between the tub and this new wall against water intrusion will be critical to havin it last.

I'd prolly want to waterproof it, then seal the waterproofing & backer & tile at the tub.

You can try a google image search starting with this in the search box. Change the "tubs" to other stuff too...
