Stone Discoloration

We have a brown discoloration on the stone around our fire place as shown in the pictures below. We used a magic eraser (probably a bad idea) to get rid of it a few months ago but it has come back in the same spot. Any ideas on what is causing this and suggestions to clean it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Stewart,

I'm guessing it's moisture. If it were on only one piece of stone I would say it might be iron oxide, rust, in the stone makeup.

I agree with John, not sure what else it could be.

After a heavy rain, I'd open the fireplace doors and look inside with a flash light, especially on the left side. You might see moisture in the firebox or it might be running around the box.

Is this a wood burning fireplace with a metal firebox or is it gas with metal box. Do you have a flue cap on top of the chimney?
