First foam board question - Roman tubs

Let's talk Roman tubs and foam board, would like to do my kids bathroom first to get the kinks worked out. Frame it out, foamboard it, specialized drain setup?

Seems to me that Schluter has a tub drain. I've never used it so I don't know much about it. But I think they have one.

I posted a sketch of a drain that can be made from available plumbing parts. It incorporates the Schluter drain. There is a barrel type stop in the overflow.

The problem with the roman tub drains I've seen is that there is no overflow.

I don't know where that sketch is. It's been a long time, but it's here somewhere.

The foam board will work if there is solid backing behind it -- close together studs and 3/4 in plywood, maybe. All screws; no nails.

Gotcha sheath it all with plywood, close together studs isn't exactly a unit on my tape measure John 12" OC?

Maybe a divot method with Oateys roman tub drain setup for the floor. Called them years ago and guy said he sends out about two a year. $200-$300 if I remember correctly as they make them when ordered. Also has the overflow

I'm sorry for being vague. I really don't know, but I was thinking closer to eight inches o.c.

Last I knew Schluters drain was running way more than $200. Theirs are made one-off by somebody in Italy.

Hey Justin,

My version uses the Kerdi Drain as is. The stop is in the overflow pipe with a little up/down lever. The version you posted probably doesn't employ an overflow.

I'm not sure why the foam boards (Wedi, Kerdi Board, whatever this USG version is) don't get promoted to the nood/DIY crowd more here. 8 lbs apiece vs. 38, truly easy to cut with a utility knife, easy to hang and secure, in the case of Wedi and I think this USG stuff you use adhesive/sealant instead of tape/bands and mortar, and inherently waterproof so no plastic sheets, paint on liquid membranes, sheet membranes, etc. Sure it's $40 a sheet more expensive but it's so much easier to use and nearly foolproof. Perfect for a DIYer.

We are a Schluter advertiser, so yes, we promote Kerdi-board and the Kerdi shower system. We certainly will recommend Durock board (USG) and Laticrete's version -- also Go Board from Johns Manville. Wedi is used by a number of pros here, and I'm sure they'll recommend it.

Curious Justin. Why use foam bd at all? If you need to frame & back the foam, why not just use backer bd?
