Mystery Foam Board

Is anyone familiar with this Sentinel Foam Board available at Floor and Decor?

https://www.flooranddecor.com/tile-f...100819143.html

The description says cement board but the one I saw in the store had a foam core and was light. I would have asked an associate but I was in a hurry to get out of there and figured there would be some info online.

I couldn't find any useful info on their website or a general web search. I imagine it is made by some other company and sold under this brand name.

Here is the email response I got from the company:

"Good morning,

Sentinel foam is premium underlayment , Overall thickness 2 mm, green color, with 25 years commercial warranty, basically sentinel foam is an impact sound reduction.

Prices $ 59.99 for 100 sq ft and $172.00 for 300 sq ft"

Um, yeah, going to have to pass on that. Now I know why it was on sale. Because nobody knows anything about it! It was about half the price of Kerdi Board though which caught my attention.

The thickness and pricing and descriptions don't seem to match at all, David. Difficult to tell just what they might be trying to sell, there.

Exactly! I specifically inquired about the tile backer foam board that I saw on display and they give me some useless info on some floor underlayment. So, definitely not going to even consider it without any installation info or requirements.

I plan on going to a floor and decor sometime this week...I will see if they have any data sheets at the "desk".

I am planning a kerdi-board shower and would be interested in the specs, as well.

I haven't been able to find any specs on it. I'm attaching a photo of the product with the 'Made in China' sticker and also what the display says about it which isn't a lot. The price seems attractive but the pictures I've seen of the corners of the product suggest that it's not all that sturdy.

Do they sell a sealant with it too? I didn't see anything on F&D's website.

I would think they would want to provide some info on mortar recommendation, fasteners, joint sealing, adhesives, etc. You could probably wing it but a little guidance would be nice, especially if there is a warranty.

It seems pretty beefy, reminds me of wedi, even though it doesn’t look like a cement surface. Has mesh embedded on the surface, stiffer then Kerdi board.

I enjoyed using usg’s board and trusted it since that company makes exterior building panels. But sentinel seems like a newcomer, so not sure I’d use it.

we have a similar product called F board, its reflects heat upwards into the room instead of under the floor (with underfloor heating)https://www.fenixgroup.cz/en/products/f-board

I looked up the warranty terms for a tile cutter under the Sentinel brand (since there is no literature for the foam board). It only mentions floor and decor. It is for sure a house brand, probably manufactured by a smorgasbord of different companies.

The only information offered is:

Floor and Decor Outlets of America, Inc.
Email: CustomerCareEscalations@flooranddecor.com
Contact: 404-471-1634

You could always ask for the MSDS sheet.

There's definitely a lot of the Chinese foam board coming on the market. I think Jet Board is one of the more popular brands. Hydro Blok is another.

It's odd that F&D doesn't have instructions for it but I think that's the way that they do things. Last year, I was looking for care instructions for one of their marble sills and they don't exist. I had a guy go all the way to corporate on it trying to find out.

Probably easier to say you installed it wrong if someone complains.

All of these foam board manufacturers have a different installation method but the boards seem to be relatively the same, ( I have only handled wedi and USG) If I were installing this "mystery board" I would be inclined to install it like the USG though I have thought about doing a mock up to install it like wedi with sealant in the seams instead of banding like USG. I feel like if there is a failure I
the waterproofing, itt is likely something I did wrong not the product itself.

it is 20 bucks cheaper than schluter. Honestly, I would rather just get a trusted brand.
