The smell wasn't too bad. The super crumbly mudded walls disintegrated when touched so the air was filled with masonry fumes. The 4x4 tiles came off with a hammer in whole pieces, usually 4 or 6 at a time. The mudded walls were removed by pulling on the wire lath from the bottom and pulling away from the wall. The mud would crumble into pecan / pea sized pieces then fall to the floor.

Even with the exhaust fan on high, the doors taped shut and the shop vac filtering the air, we still spent an hour vacuuming and dusting before we left for the day. Will do more tomorrow as the walls now have a film of partially vacuumed off dust coating them.

3x3 shower on the second floor took 9 hours to demo mostly due to the very crampt space (for Texas standards). . No need to go to the gym tonight

Heck, the prep on that shower looks better than a lot of em! That's still not necessarily a good thing though...

Check out these beauties from my recent master and guest bathroom full redo. The first one is the decorative tile going up to my shower door in the master bath. The second one is around the tub in the guest bath. My terrible contractor used the phrase a lot "once I get this caulk on there you wont be able to tell". We can tell....a blind man could tell.

Went to give a new construction estimate today. I don't think we are going to get involved with this job.

1- No pre-slope, but instead some very soft glue. Maybe roof patching tar
2- Sealed the weep holes closed
3- No blocking for the liner
4- Dam corners not glued properly allowing leaks
5- No door jamb waterproofing
6- Hardiebacker installed with a few drywall nails
7- CBU taped and floated with drywall mud
8- Studs not notched for the liner
9- Floors so out of level the hardwoods will be a mess at the doorways
10- Doors set too low
11- No bullnose / edge pieces for the hand cut 3/4" thick tiles
12- Tubs not set
13- Drywallers not finished
14- No air conditioning
15 - Needs this done yesterday (see #13)
16- The exterior decks are level, if not sloped to the house
17- Not enough flashing exposed (if any) along the decks to allow for mud bed

After I explained all his problems and what all needed to be done to fix them all ..... he never called back or emailed the building plans.

Gee what a surprise

Did you know that they already "prepped" it, Paul, or was that a surprise?

I've gotten to a point that I won't mess with jobs unless I do the prep. Other peoples idea of "tile ready" may not be the same as your own...

Leaking shower. First time seeing anything like this. The shower base was built from 2x4s and foam. They literally bent the middle of the 2x4s by shimming the outer edges to make a pitch. Owner said they initially called the person who did this job about the leak. Apparently he opened up the ceiling underneath and shot more foam around the shower base. Obviously that didn't last long. Does bad electrical work count?

We demo'd a bathroom wall today to find this little bit of butchery

on the other side there were only 4 bare wires covered only by drywall mud & paint

Holy crap, Vi. That is pretty much worst case scenario.

And yes, paul. That is custom work belonging in this thread. People who do crap like that make all our lives harder.
