Local hotel laundry room getting some new tile installed...you may want to shield your eyes. A friend took this and showed me at lunch. I almost spit out my food from laughing.

The part about washing the grout after you pump it in the joint on the grout bag was probably worn off!

They skipped that last crucial step.

"Did you wash?"
"No, thought you did!"

They had the door propped open and didn't see where they forgot to clean.

Current project: Commercial Fitness Center

This steamer was only 4 years old.

When I first demoed the floor I thought the waterproofing was just loosed laid pvc with tile directly bonded to it. The sheet membrane was completely loose from the slab and very smooth. Once I cut the perimeter wall and around the drain, the membrane rolled up in a sheet (tile still attached). Upon further inspection I noticed fabric indentation in the thinset (see photo)

So to my amazement everything seemed to be installed correctly. An orange CPE material, thinset to concrete slab with blue caulking at seams and corners.

This is the first time I have ever seen the polyester fabric disintegrate! Once that goes there is nothing left to hold on.

Nothin new here !! Attended the Schluter camp at the CTEF 12 r more years ago and the guy that did this job was there, when I recognized him as a local in my area and noticed that he paid no more attention at the seminar than a blind person .
Shower was leaking ,tore it out just above the seat. Kerdi on some walls to 2 feet above pan on sheetrock. Seat kerdied no inside or outside corners or dog ears or k-fix. K band on foam tray as needed but no Kerdi on tray .No thinset under drain to tray and 1/4x1/4 trowel used to set tray on plywood. Granite sill adhered to 3 stack 2x4`s with no rock or kerdi wrapped or corners . And to top it all off wall tile on kerdi set with mastic ....Rot everwhere !!! Out to the floor tile outside shower Ditra set good in thinset but tile pulled up with screw driver . No filling of trapezoids no back buttering of 18x18 tiles and 1/4x1/4 trowell used...
Every thing done wrong !!
Some of the other pics wouldn't load so these are the only ones that loaded but you`ll prolly get the Idea!!

So, with work just getting busier, I had to hire some guys. Finding a "good" guy, is another thing!!

So this guy answers my ad and tells me he's got close to 30 years laying tile. A little older than me, trained in mudwork, does it all, greatest around... yaddah, yaddah, yaddah.

"Great, can you install Schluter systems as well?" I ask.
"Oh yeah, pfft..no problem".

So I put him to work. First thing I notice is he installs all the big sheets before doing his corners. Ooookay....
Then I notice he's got thinset EVERYWHERE...all over the walls, himself, etc. He's got HUGE speedbumps going on wherever the 6" strip of kerdi is going.
Forgets a couple of outside corners...then I notice there's no drain in a unit he says is finished.
"Where's the drain?"
"Oh, I put those in afterwards"

I manage to fix those mistakes, and then proceed to let him start tiling. Forget the fact that it took him over TEN HOURS to put up 6, (no make that 5, one fell off, that he never replaced) pieces of 12x24 on the ceiling. (My son did the same ceiling in an hour and a half).

But this is the quality I came back to: (He's now threatening to lein the building unless I pay him his entire invoice).

Skillz

Sadly, that was "good" by rupert standards. Still is. I wont/dont do crap like that anymore, pretty much a result of hanging out on this forum. Id do a mud job on that if I had to do it again.
Id like to go back and suggest to myself a mud job.... "Whats mud?"
