Rick,
Great looking walls and floor. But I'm on board with CX here and think that your criss-cross method is wholly inferior to thorough scarifying with either a specialty tool or a notched trowel. You need texture across the whole surface of the scratch coat, including the corners. Maybe next time, right?

I've gotten into the habit of priming all of my wallboard installs with highly modified thinset. I use Laticrete's 254 gray thinset for the surfacing and then I can use a no-sag formula (which remains hydrated longer) for the wall work. I've just had too many occurrences of painted walls getting soft or other problems left behind by other trades. Yes, I do include this extra step in my bids.

shaughnn,

i talked to the boss and he goes yeah a scratcher is the best tool, i said then why dont we use em instead of x'ing the mud? he said they cost 10 bux, i have one in garage i am putting it in my truck for next time. THose italians are cheap.

Chad we used a hollywood threshold. It helps bring theslope back down, the mud cut back to around 2 1/2 inches at the door.

Speaking of scratch coat....this tool works well, I think it cost about $10. Raking it like this really gives a lot of gription for the next coat.

Here at the local place that sells these tools, it is called a "stucco rake".

i have one in my garage. We just never spoke of this tool, then when cx told me to use it i asked the man i work with and he said yeah they are the best, i said gee thanks for telling me that now. I need to ask questions to learn with him, i put it in my truck with my hawk so next time i can scratch it up all pretty.

Rick,
Put it behind your truck seat so the tines don't get all bent up. I used to know a mechanic who kept his tucked into the visor of his truck. Some truck boxes have a crossbar on the inside of the lid which you can slip trowels and scarifiers into also.

Throw out that broken radio, that zip-lock baggie of wedges and those Penthouse magazines and you'll have plenty of room.
