Jim,
the original intent was to have the cut offs from the door go off to the small side, but someone who shall remain nameless couldn't figure that out.

Had a meeting with some very well off homeowners.
She was bent on the 2x2s surrounding the 12x12s.I used the force to talk her into the 4x4s.

Don't know L.T. What kinda project is this? many times you need to consider the environment it will be used in. Let the rest or the room dictate the design.
Im not really feeling either one per se. it depends on the context, what kinda style does her project have, what look does she want?
How about smashing up the big tile into small pieces and using that as a border..certainly make it easier to layout.

No Jim,you let the one writing the check dictate the design. You dont pick it, you just stick it.

Doing an outside patio job, using a new decking system from gratedex. Putting on a 16x24 Slate.
I love not having to grout it when we're done!! Now I wait for a large 10' by 5' high outdoor fireplace to be built, and we're covering it with the Laminam porcelain sheets from Stonetile International.
I'll post up progress pics up to completion. For now, we just finished the deck..

Dave: do those tiles get glued down, or are they free floating?
