How to tile around immovable kitchen island

I am going to be tiling my kitchen fairly soon with 3/8 floor tile. The floor currently has 3/4 hardwood on it, which will be removed. There is also an island that has a 350 pound piece of granite on it. The island cabinets were set over the hardwood, but I can’t risk moving it temporarily to remove that flooring because of the risk of breaking the granite.
So I have to somehow remove the flooring as close as possible to the perimeter of the cabinets. I can do that, but it seems that the finished mortar+tile height will be slight lower than the finished hardwood height.
How do I treat that height difference? Some kind of edge treatment (tile, wood trim) around the island cabinets?

Hi Tim, shoe mould is sometimes used. It's 3/4 inch tall and 1/2 inch wide.

Hi Tim,

I go along with Davy. I think you'll have to cut the flooring flush with the cabinet side. Use either a multi-tool with saw attachment or a toe space saw. The toe space saw is a little risky to use, though.

Is this going over concrete or wood subfloor? If it's a wood subfloor, you should figure in the height of a tile backer.

KMan - Good catch. Yes, 1/4 tile backer over the subfloor. That brings the finished tile height just over the hardwood. Similar problem, but I think the shoe mould solves that rather easily. And I just *might* be able to get a small circular saw within 3/4 inch of those cabinets. I have a multitool saw, but it just takes so long to get thru hardwood with it.

If you’re not familiar with a toe kick saw, they are a small circular saw with a very off-set blade that is meant to cut exactly what you need to cut. But the off-set blade unfortunately permits you to twist the saw a bit and cause it to kick back. If you’re going to use this tool, it’s worth practicing on scrap a bit. They are available at some tool rental places.
