Need help, water leak, tiles outside on patio

Hey All,
Trying to help a friend here and one thing led to another.

Found out that there was a massive leak coming into his basement. Traced it back and it seems that there's a porch or patio above his basement. It was built after the house was built.

Pulled back the tile and found out whomever installed this did something strange. It looks like Kerdi but they installed it with the fleece side up. They used thinset to put it down. Then thinset on the fleece side with tiles. Anyway, this didn't work at all. Water is pooling around certain areas and going into the foundation.

Now I pulled all this out, not sure how to go about 'fixing' this for my friend. Not sure what to do here.

Here are some pic. Any suggestions?

Well, Kerdi is not speced for use outside, and even if it was, a couple of things would need to happen for this to work...
- the area needs to be sloped away from the house
- you need flashing at the walls, and a drip edge at the outside to prevent water from pooling or running off the edge and in/down

FWIW, Kerdi, if it was used, has fleece on both sides, and thinset is what is used to bond it to surfaces and tile.

Schluter does have methods to build a deck. Noble's membrane is probably better known for that application. To be successful, though, you need the two points above to be true, and then to use the products you select properly.

HI Andrew,

As Jim indicated, everything has to be right in an installation such as this, proper flashing AND waterproofing at the walls, adequate slope of 1/4 inch per running foot and waterproofing over the entire area. Furthermore, a proper roof edge system needs to be used to direct water away from the house.

Schluter, Mapei, Laticrete and Noble Company have working systems. So do others. Their instructions need to be followed to the T.

Oh, and it looks like you have some more scraping and cleaning up to do.
