walk-in shower stall question

How far should I extend the tile on the left wall for this shower stall?

I want to stop the tile right where the shower pan ends into the drain (4.5 ft). Is that length OK without a shower curtain or door?

What would you do?

Hi Jim, welcome. Without a door or curtain, I'm afraid you'll have some splashing on the bath floor with a shower that's 4 1/2 ft wide. Probably not a flood of water but some splashing. You could always try it and add the glass later if it's needed.

Yes, the floor will be tiled all the way through past the drain to the other side of the room. So that's OK.

Welcome, Jim.

I trust that would mean you intend to waterproof the entire floor and the walls at least a couple feet outside what you'll consider the shower area, yes?

I'm still not clear about your drain location.

That's right. Ditra over the entire floor.

In the image you can see the centered cutout for a linear drain.

Kerdi goes all the way to the window--it's a question of how far I should tile it.

There's a foot to the left of the window, using 12 x 24 porcelain

4.5' in the stall
2' to the window
2.5' window
1' to the left the window

Could be done, but I'm trying to find out if I can get away with just tiling 4.5. That would be neat.

Jim, that 4.5’ is fairly short for a door-less stall.

I think most folks that are reading this don’t have a full picture of what’s going on and I think that’s contributing to a smaller number of responses to you.

I’d want to know the rest of the details. We see what you’re talking about on the left wall and the physical location of the lineal drain. But...

If you want to stop the tile on the left wall at 4.5’, what are you covering the waterproofing membrane with?
How big are tiles inside and outside the shower pan?
How much is the floor sloped inside the pan and outside the lineal drain?
Using a level to determine this: what is the height difference between the top of the drain grate and the unsloped/flat/level part of the bathroom floor?
Are you overlapping the Kerdi inside the shower 2” onto the Ditra outside, or just abutting?
How big is the wall on the right, what’s it’s configuration, how far is it’s waterproofing, and how far is it being tiled?
Is there just one single shower head, which direction does it spray, and is a “normal” or high volume spray?

At least those are the first few questions that would help us steer you right.
