The difference between Porcelain & Ceramic tile

I am doing my new living room and family room in tile and have a couple questions. I went to several tile outlets (one near the quarry and a showroom) and now I am confused. I understand about stone and would prefer it but it's expensive.
What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic?
Does ceramic break easier? Does porcelain last longer?
The adjoining kitchen and dining room already have the cheap, white ceramic tiles in a diamond pattern (about 8" blocks).
I am planning on using an 18" or 20" tile that look like travertine in a square pattern with a border separating them from the white tile. (will that look right?)
Thanks for any input. I appreciate it.

To the best of my knowledge, porcelain is fired longer and hotter than ceramic, so is subsequently much harder. For a even better explanation, you can read up in the liberry.
