Slate backsplash for vanity

Hi there -

I am finishing up a bathroom that is about 3 years in the making :-(

I have a small antique table that I will be using as a vanity; its small size is forcing me to use a wall mounted faucet. I am thinking that having a wall mounted faucet will create a situation where more water than normal will get splashed on to the wall and thus having a backsplash would be helpful.

I have some leftover 3/8" 12 x 12 slate as well as some 2" x 2" tumbled slate that I thought I could use to create a backsplash. Bit I am concerned that the finished backsplash will stick out from the wall and look a bit strange (I only want the backsplash to sit above the furniture piece which is about 34 inches wide.

My question is am I overthinking this? will it look OK? Or should I cut out the drywall where the backsplash will go, but in a piece of 1/4" cement fiberboard so that the tile doesn't project out as much???

thanks

Tiling over the existing sheetrock is OK. If it is painted, you will want to rough it up with some sandpaper first

Thanks Jason

I hadn't thought about roughing up the sheetrock; good tip as it is painted with a fairly glossy paint

Hi David,

A lovely backsplash will enhance the aesthetics of your vanity. Is it the same stone as the floor?

Hi Marge -

Yep, it is the same slate as the floor. Though I saved the nicest pieces for the floor, so all I have left are a couple of floor tiles (one that isn't too pretty) and 2 sheets of 2" x 2".

I think that I will cut the floor tiles into maybe about 4 inch strips and then frame the whole thing with 2" X 2". so final would be about 8 inches tall, which puts it just under the light switch. The final touch is I have 2 small fish fossils that are in a gray shale; I think I will cut out some rectangles in the floor tile and insert them. My description probably isn't the best, hopefully you can picture it

thanks
