Kitchen Backsplash

Not sure if I should start a new thread for this, just had 1 question about doing a backsplash in my kitchen. Thereís some sort of sheet of laminate or something on the backsplash right now and Iím wondering if I need to rip it off or can tile directly on top of it for the backsplash?

Found this burried in your shower project thread, Dave, so I moved it here and am just bumping it for attention if it's still in progress.

If the laminate is sound I would sand it well with 50-80 grit sand paper and tile over it. I am doing the same on one wall. The other wall, I removed the laminate and it is way more work. The removal pulled off some of the sheetrock paper and now I have to seal it with Zinsser Gardz and patch it to make it smooth before tiling.
