Outside Corners - Mitered, Bullnose, etc

Can someone give me a primer on the design aesthetic choice when tiling a outside 90
Mitered Edge
Bullnose on one leading edge
2 Squares Flush
(Tile Corner Trim) - not a fan

Are there rules to use what type of tile edge treatment or does it all just boil down to personal opinion.

Alan, I have done outside corners every way known to man. I have mitered field tile, bullnose, bullnose outside corner piece, used schluter profiles, gotten creative with listellos, so on so fourth. In the case of mitering field tiles at the time I didn't know what Schluter was and wanted a more old world look anyway.

In some cases personal opinion, in others no choice. If you do tile long enuf I feel you usually know what is gonna look the best before the customer even has the choice to make. Give the customer options if you have such. For the listello thing I have on occasion cut part of the listello out like a quarter round and used it to go around a corner looks pretty sweet when done right.

Maybe that one is in the thread "tricks of the trade" I should put that one in there if it isn't

You could start a thread on this and see different ways of doing it, I know there are always people willing to share here if it will help out anyone. I'd certainly have some input.

Sam, I am taking regular field tiles and using a profile wheel to create the bullnose.

How hard or easy was the profiling wheel.....

Pros - One cannot do this let's say on a 1x4 mosiac sheet.

Paul - Interesting Pic. On the pic you showed, this shows 2 tiles , what is the *standard degree* on which the mitered edge is cut. 42 degrees ?

Alan, the profiling was very easy (I used a 6" profile wheel mounted on a tile saw, I am not that brave to go freehand). The harde(er) part was polishing the edge, since my tiles are polished. Not hard really, just tedious.

Who says you can't profile mosaics on a sheet?? Of course it looks nice with nicer tile. Oceanside = POS imho.

I am bumping this thread to get more information on Miters & Bullnoses. Leon's example is beautiful and looks perfectly done. Paul's example of the miter is very helpful too. I have 12x24 tile that I need to wrap around a 6" stud wall that divides the shower alcove and an alcove with cabinets. The bullnose would be perfect, having the 6" face be bullnosed on both edges and the alcove sides sit inside the bullnose edge. Or I could do the miter, but I won't have 2 factory bevels as Paul's example shows, as my tiles are too big.

Questions:
1) Which is easier to do Miter or Bullnose?
2) Is the "profiling" blade expensive?
3) How hard is porcelain tile to polish after the profile blade is used to bullnose?
4) How is the polishing done?

I seem to be leaning towards the bullnose

Barbara, be aware that the tiles in Leon's picture appear to be a full body porcelain tile - it is the same color an density all the way through without a glaze on it. You want to consider if that is the kind of tiles you have, if not, the inside of the tile is likely a different color, and would need to be painted after being bullnosed.
