I am going to disagree with CX about the shower niche on an exterior wall, in particular if you have 2x6 framing. If you can put 1.5 in polyiso insulation board behind the niche (and perhaps use something like 1/4 in Hardibacker ONLY for that area, then you will have good insulationand still enough depth for a nice niche. Would it be my preference if interior walls were a better option? No! Is it doable? Absolutely. I have done that as well as I had no other choice for niche placement, and with good foam insulation in place it works quite well. Now, water supply lines in an exterior wall is another story. That I would avoid at all cost, especially in Montana.
