Liquid nails in a shower
thought you guys could chime in on this. Looked at a full marble slab shower the other day and they installed it with Liquid nails. Thoughts?

I haven't done large marble slabs before. However, I lost faith in liquid nails when a backsplash I installed with it just randomly came loose a year after install. I used to install countertops and backsplashes with it.
I find liquid nails too brittle for my liking as it ages. I've switched to urethane based construction adhesives almost exclusively (PL Premium, etc)
That backsplash I reinstalled with 100% silicone and it's strong as hell several years later (repeat customer). I do all countertops with silicone now.

Fred, how old was this shower? I would be afraid of the oils soaking in and making it's way to the surface. I'm no expert on that and I doubt it would be a problem with all types of stone but could be with some.

Slabs should have been installed with mortar. I know this would technically be wrong but when I was a helper when we installed slabs we would back butter the slab and the wall. Then we would put a bunch of blobs of mortar on the wall and then beat the slab in until it was plumb and level.

LN has product Marble and Granite adhesive, not recommended for underwater installation.
Regular liquid nail can bleed through, happened to me years ago..... had to rip it out.

SC! its spreading lol. Half the state of Fla thinks stone is put in with liquid nails. I lost a job because the HO bought the stair treads in Miami from a friend who said they should be put in with liquid nails because they do it all the time.

I've torn out one stone slab shower and several cultured marble showers that where adhered with Liquid Nails or something similar. A couple had bled through most had not, but in every case they where held together only by the silicone at the seams, the liquid nails was doing nothing.

Karl,
I have seen full slab shower with this method fail, the slabs came unbonded from the wall due to the weight of the stone itself.

I've had to show fabricators/installers how to use thinset more than once.
