Big Mistakes...

I am not a good DIYer. I am just getting too old! However, when I bought travertine for a bathroom renovation and was told to seal it, I bought the sealer and applied it to the tiles. The problem is, I didn't read the directions. Turns out it was the wrong product (DuPont Sealer and Finish) and I used it for my tub/shower surround. Now I hear I have to strip it off...but the grout has not been sealed. HELP! I am so confused. I don't know what to do. I used it on the floor too but at this moment I am not concerned about that screw-up (should I be?) I guess is should go play cards at the senior center and quit trying to do things I am not equipped to do!!

Welcome, Claudia.

Take heart. John Bridge is certainly your elder and he still tries a DIY project hisownself now and again.

Have you contacted the folks at E.I.DuPont about this problem? Try 877-786-6383 and see if they can't connect you to a helpful individual.

The product you used, likely purchased at Lowe's(?), is not gonna be one that our folks are real familiar with, I think. But hang on, one of our gurus may have tried it or encountered it along the way.

My opinion; worth price charged.

Hi Claudia -

If the floor appearance is acceptable, don't worry about that. It is the areas with consistent water contact that are the usual problems for a coating type product...which is why we don't recommend them for showers and wet areas. A bathroom floor is usually not an issue.
Travertine is most often sealed with a penetrating sealer.
Coating type sealers don't 'breathe' and moisture that gets between the seal and the stone has the potential to cause the coating to develop problems.
If you have an even and uniform application of the Seal and Finish your stone is protected from staining. It is only the durability of the coating in the areas you've applied that is an issue.
Bottom line is the product may not last in a shower and should be removed. Whether you do it now or later is up to you. Sometimes people in the same position chose to just live with it until it becomes obvious it is time to remove the coating, while others choose to strip the product now and replace with a penetrating sealer.

Well, see there, Claudia? Now you have The Word.

I didn't know if George would speak to the non-STP DuPont products, but since he has, you can consider yours spoken to.
