Rates on EXTRA'S??

Hello all... not looking to but I was looking to see what prices kinda stay inline on the extra's... (if u dont wanna post u can private me)

I know there is a big opinion on figuring price per s/f for laying tile, what about extra's?

cutting jambs?
offset walls?
stone thresholds?
keyes?
borders? of course this varies bigtime

anything obvious I'm missing?

btw, I know a few or you price jobs by time, so please do not be offended by this.....

Never got paid to cut my jambs; part of the deal.
Thresh holds same.
Any thing fancy like a rug in the foyer or a garden tub, guesstimate time x $XX.xx per hour.

Hi Brett, somehow you can figure it into the job. Say if you have an hour of cutting jambs add your hourly rate onna bid. Same with the other stuff.

I do charge by the square foot, what rate depends on how much work is involved to complete that square foot. You'll develop an upcharge system that is based on man hours and if it's easier for you ( which it is for me and my local clients ) you can boil that down to square foot.
Every market is going to be different ( a given ) and most have a local ' going rate ' I use this as a base and upcharge for every ( stinkin' ) thing I can. No, I don't have a charge for jambs, not sure what your off-set walls are, but I'll take a stab at out-of-square, but again no upcharge, definitely for any type of pattern / border.
Too many of those things pile up against you that you don't charge for and badda-bing you gotta hit them for something, somewhere, sometime, somehow.
Make some colleagues in your area instead of competition, this way you can connect, link elbows and form a ' going rate '. There are at least 4-5 of us onna same page here. These are the people you'll refer when your busy, and maybe get a call from one of 'em when you're not.

I use a SF price as a ball park figure for builders, etc. but when I do the take-offs for the job I always figure how much time it is going to take me. More than ordinary amount of jambs, angled walls, borders, diagonal, staggered... all figured on time. Is the customer talkative, pain in the ass, etc.

What them others said, Brett. You just gotta figger how long it'll take and how much you wanna charge for that long.

I do all manner of different work on various jobs and have found you just gotta look at what needs done and try to estimate how long it's gonna take you to do it all. If it's something you haven't done before, guess. Some of it you'll not get right until you've bid it wrong a time or two. Matter of experience.

Some of us who have decades of experience in all phases of residential construction can look at even the smallest job and be able to underbid it in no time at all.

My opinion; worth price charged.

Hmmm, Jamb cutting charges. There's a revenue stream I never thought about. Actually, the first time your helper cuts one high or low or slow or crooked, we all wish we would have charged for those jambs.

I've never charged for cutting jambs, it doesn't take that long. I do start by the sq ft and add to it. Like for showers I add for jamb labor, building a seat, designs tiling around a window, stuff like that.
