Layout suggestions requested (see pics)

Good morning. Lurking on this forum has gotten me through to the homestretch of this bath/shower remodel I'm working on. This may seem trivial but I'm hoping someone with more knowledge/experience with aesthetics can give me advice. Please see linked pictures.

I'm doing brick layout with alternating rows, 12x12 then 12x6. I have a shelf across one of the walls that starts at the bottom of a 12x12 row. I restarted the pattern at the top of the shelf to match back up to the top of the 12x12 rows on the adjacent walls but I'm not sure how I want to do the vertical face and the 45 degree face of the shelf. Should I stack these without brick pattern or should I offset with the brick pattern twice and be back in line? Does that make sense? Initially I was planning to offset twice but the more I think about it the more I worry that it'll look like I just have a 3 collapsed rows as opposed to one taller 12" row.

My eyes would tell me to align joints on vertical and angled face below shelf with the narrow row above so it looks like adjacent course, only with a bump out.

I sometimes sketch something like this just to see both options. SketchUp is the tool of choice.

Eric I would line up the bottom like your top piece connects with it, since your angle stops at the bottom joint of your 12x12 I'd basically continue that pattern, in theory like the shelf isn't there.

So it will be "straight". Since you have to have a joint running through the middle as well because of the angle change, I'd make that joint (horizontal one) as small as possible "16th" to give the illusion that the tile folds around the angle.


Points for using the same tile on each angle change so the pattern (if any) carries through the fold.

Does that make sense?

Makes sense to me. I like the idea of using a smaller grout joint there, I hadn't thought of that. I'll post a pic when it's up. Thanks a lot.
