Leveling Substrate for Prefab Shower Tray (Pan)?

First of all, I’m not sure if this question belongs on this forum, my apologies if it does not.

I have a prefabricated fiberglass shower tray (pan) with an acrylic coating. My floor is flat and level but manufacturer requires a mortar leveling substrate be laid. I’m a little concerned about potential shrinkage and sagging of substrate resulting in separation/voids between substrate and tray. Maybe this is not an issue if product is mixed according to instructions? Does anyone have a recommendation on a good leveling substrate to use? I read some use Plaster of Paris, but I will stay away from that stuff because it dries way to fast for my speed.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Masonry mortar mix is easy to work with and can be purchased at the large orange box.

For when DIY isn't such a good idea...

Hi, Rich.

Is the bottom of your tray relatively flat or is it a hollow ‘waffle-like’ pattern?

Update: I got rid of the prefab fiberglass shower pan and going back to using a solid pan like an Onyx. It cost a lot more, but will perform longer than I will be living.
