I have used Custom's Uncoupling Mat Mortar. Seems that finally got on board with a premium un-modified thinset. In my local market the only thinset that works with Kerdi/Ditra has been the Kerabond from Mapie. Nothing else was available; either because lack of distributors or a local vendor did not stock the material. In my market, a single bag is just over $10. I have used it on two projects so far. Mixes up nice and creamy and does not seem to be as sandy as the kerabond.

There was a demo of it a while back at local Daltile. Gave us each two bags to try. That is how I got my hands on it the first time. Local Dal is now stocking it in grey. Trying to talk them into carrying white. They only want to stock one color. Our market is still kind of slow to using Schluter membranes, there are more and more guys trying it though.

Jay, if you are installing glass you generally want white over grey, but you wouldn't be using that mud for a glass install.

I also use white mud if I am installing any lighter tile, or any tile that will have a light grout.

I have used about 10 bags of the stuff and really like it. It seems like it is just like versabond only minus the polymers. Real nice for installing kerdi and ditra.

Unfortunately Custom's major distributor is the big orange box, and although I can coerce the Department Head of the local one to bring in a few bags, I don't see them selling it in large qtys.

I wonder why they would market this when rumor has it that they bought the design for a notoriously bad uncoupling membrane from a DITRA copy cat and plan on marketing it as "Spider Mat" ,or so a little bird told me. Seems to me it would be easier to market as a premium unmodified only. As far as I know, Ditra is the only uncoupler that specs it's use. The rest just tell you to use modified.

There is a tile supply house in my area that stocks customs full line of products, stuff you'll never see in depot.
