Best method to build floating shelves

I've got to build some floating shelves for a shower. They need to be 12" x 48" and 1 1/2" to 2" thick. They will be supported on each side and the back.

We will be tiling with 12x24 Carrara and profiling the edges.

In the past we have use aluminum tubing wrapping with GoBoard but wanted to see if anyone else had a better way?

Thanks in advance.

Why not use 3cm slab? A lot easier and better looking in the end.

Can a slab span that far with nothing supporting under it?

I think so. As long as there are no soft veins like you find in some stone. I wouldn't hesitate to use Carrera 3cm in that application. I could be wrong tho. I've been wrong once before. I'm sure someone else will offer an opinion.

If they're supported along all three sides and not subject to someone standing or sitting on them, they'll easily hold standard shower items.

However, if you think someone might stand or sit on them for some reason, it might be best to use a different method/material.

What are the chances of that happening? Finding something that's only 2" thick but will span 48" for standing or sitting, and still be shower-worthy may be a challenge.

I'd have a chat with a local stone fabricator about this and given the size, you likely could find a remnant for a good price. Profiling and polishing the edges can get expensive but compare that to what your time is worth.

I've picked up some stone vanity tops for half price that way.
