Spacer size??

Son just called me and he's doing his shower wall(s) tonight. He said he's using 8x10 ceramics but forgot to grab spacers. He wants to use sanded grout so ---- what size do you guru's recommend so I can send the LOML off to get for him. Thanks

first off sanded grout on an 8x10 tile doesnt sound right to me.

if the 8x10 tile is a ceramic wall tile he is going to want to use an Un-sanded grout.

and possible if the tile are of good quality they will have "lugs" on the side of them that will automatically make the tile space themselves. if they dont use the closest joint he can do and use Un sanded grout.

Hi Joe, like Brian said usually these tiles have lugs or you space them 1/16" to an 1/8" and use unsanded grout. If you use a 3/16" or bigger then you can use sanded.

Thank you kindly men - I told him that Un-sanded was way to go and took a shot at 1/16th spacer. I knew someone here would either slap that down or confirm - nothing to lose since the LOML was picking up for him and dropping off later.

I asked him about the spacer nubby already on and he said no. He said they were a ceramic tile from Spain and that's about it. Spendy ones too at about $14 s/f. I know there are way more costly ones out there but these seemed pretty plain and .... dare I say ho-hum? He's not on here - or hope not. If so I guess this will be awaiting me when I stop by ....
Why sanded I still wondering myself --- pretty persistent on it. He loses

Hmmmmmm ..... Mike my man. Toss a lotta wood at the 'skys this year? That be me favorite thing in life to do from June thru ice-up. Bet you "create" some down time when they hittin'

I think you got your question answered, but I have a follow up question for the experts. What determines the size of spacer? Is it the size of the tile or where they are being placed? Or is it the quality of the tile?

I've got some 12"x20" tile that I'll be installing for my tub surround. I've measured some from various cartons and they're all very close to the same size. Could I get away with a 1/16" spacer? Does the grout provide any structural integrity that my larger tiles might need?

Hi Joe, yeah tossed lotsa wood and hair. Caught a few, lost a few and seen lots. Pretty much me too from mid May to Nov.
Hi Jim, spacing is a kind of personal preference. Yes you can go with a 1/16" on yours if they are very consistant in size.
