water valve?

Enough lurking. I am really new at this kind of home repair(retired field- mechanic) , so I`ll have a lot of ???`s any and all reply`s are helpfull. I`m doing a full bathroom rebuilt, from floor to ceiling. Changing from tub/shower (tub in need of replacement) to shower only. What brand shower single-valve to install? Moen, American Standard, Delta,etc. , also how high to relocate new valve from it`s present location.

Hi Ricardo, This is the place where pros argue with one another. I'm moving us out of here. (I found this in the Pro Hangout.)

I like the Moen valves. There work well and are easy to fix. You simply change one component and you've rebuilt the entire fixture. They are cheap, and they last forever.

Locate it where you can reach out and grab it without having to bend over -- about four feet from the floor, usually.

When you put the shower head up, make sure you don't put it so low that ya hafta duck down to get your head wet... I hate it when that happens.....

Another Moen vote..

I get my Moens from a plumbing supply house and not a box store... Moen sends a little too much plastic to the box stores for me...

Since this is the Pro's hangout out I guess I can chime in with a disenting vote. Maybe it's because we have hard water here in the Indy but every plumber I talk to hates Moen and swear by Delta for your run of the mill plumbing fixtures.

My plumber likes Delta too. But I think it's because he stocks all the replacement parts on his truck

for whatever my 2 cents is worth. Im a DIYer, non professional. Im in the same process as you. I just finished installing a Kohler mixing valve and diverter and found it quite easy. The trims and valves all feel solid. I also bought the valve, shower head and valve trim, diverter valve and trim and handshower with sliding bar all for less than 600 bucks. For kohler i thought this was reasonable--i got it online. I ended up calling Kohler about a part and the tech support was very friendly and helpful even to me , the non-professional. I went to HD and lowes and found things felt too cheap, and as mentioned earlier, too much plastic.

I do not think you'll go wrong with Delta or Moen. Remember when it comes to plumbing fixtures you get what you pay for. Put a little more $$ out now and you'll be happier with the results in the long run.

I'm a Delta fan myself.

The reason they hate the Moen's is because the Moen rep comes and gives a great deal but 2 yrs later it needs repairs.Then they can't find parts for the Moens's easily. There is only one plumbing supply house that I frequent that has Moen parts but usually they have to order them. The Delta if it needs repair, is usually readily available.

Of course here I sit in a house that has 5 Moen faucets, which I bought b/4 I went into the HandyWOMAN business But also I don't have kids and I live alone. Whenever I get to my bathroom remodel (when will that be?) I may get something fancier than a Delta.

$600 for Kohler is a really good deal.

HEY, thanks for the idea. Might be a great hook-up. My brother-inlaw works for a local large plumbing supply company. I think I`ll go there today and buy him a cup of coffee.
