Hardiboard Shower niche - ok to clauk?

Hi all,

Just finished hanging the hardiboard in my 3X3 shower, with a built in niche.

The back, top, bottom and sides of the niche are also hardiboard, and the joints are pretty tight. Instead of trying to squeeze thin set into those itty bitty joints is it acceptable to simply squeeze a bead of silicone in there - working it deep into the joints?

Silicone would work but I prefer to use Redgard waterproofer over the entire niche. This would protect the entire niche - not just the seams

Redgard is available from Home Depot

I had planned on using RedGard within and around the niche but isn't RedGard too thin to seal the gaps by itself? The gaps are probably 1/8".

If not silicone or Redgard in the gaps, should I just go low tech and smoosh thin set in the gaps with my finger?

Dan, I think RedGard will work for you just fine. It's pretty thick stuff. Just plan on an extra layer or two on those corners.

And, they don't have to be filled IN completely - just sealed. Make sure the RedGard is sealing the entire area. Even if there is a little "valley" along the seam, it won't matter as long as you have it sealed with RedGard. The thinset on the back of your tiles will fill it all in nicely.
