Talked to the contractor about the shower pan. He said he wants to add a layer of mortar. No date set yet.
In the meantime I applied Redgard to the walls (because waterproofing of the walls and niche was questionable) and started with the back wall, which was quite uneven too. The straight board on the bottom is wedged in, not to damage the liner.

Marion, you can't just "add a layer of mortar" to a final mud bed in a traditionally built shower receptor. That final mud bed needs to be of a proper consistency to both support the tile floor and to drain correctly as designed. He can't patch on top of what you have without using some sort of bonding layer, which will disrupt the draining portion of that equation.

What needs to be done is remove the existing top mud bed and place a new one properly.

And you do understand that now that you've applied the RedGard you have altered his shower and will now be deemed responsible for any future problems, related or not?

My opinion; worth price charged.
