Oops! Threshold Mistake in Bathroom

Greetings Everyone,

This is my first post on the forums and appreciate the website and everyone's expertise on how to dry cut tile and Hardi-Backerboard after it has already been laid and thinset applied?

I did my 3rd floor tiling project ever, this Thanksgiving Holiday and as I was putting the door back on to my bathroom, I realized that I have made a drastic error in how I handled the threshold from tile to carpet.

Basically, I had to remove old tile and backerboard and lay down new backerboard (Hardi-Backer) and 12"X24" marbled grey porcelain tile. Well, when I was removing the old tile, they had a ~2-inch strip of white marble (appears to be standard threshold marble you can buy at Home Depot) as the threshold and it appears that when they laid the carpet, the carpet runs short and you could see the white threshold that extended under the door.

Well, because I am an idiot, I extended it to the carpet, not realizing that when the door is closed, the grey tile can be seen with the door closed and stands out like a sore thumb.

I thinset the Hardi-Backerboard to the plywood subfloor and then thinset the 1/4" thick porcelain tile on top. Now I am having to cut back the tile and Hardi-Backerboard a few inches in the doorway, so I can go with the white marble threshold to help disguise the shortness in the carpet that doesn't extend far enough into the doorway.

This is going to be a tough one for me, because I can't figure out the best way to cut it edge to edge between the door jambs and everything has already been laid and thinset? The porcelain tile also worries me because it's 1/4" thick and tough as nails.

Take off the door jambs/trim, then use a right angle grinder with 4" diamond wheel to cut the tile and underlayment. If you cut into the rough framing, no big deal, except for the smoke.

Thank you for your advice. With your reply, it sounds so simple and gives me a good excuse to go get an angle grinder. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

You can also have someone hold or tape the vacuum hose to the grinder to cut down on the dust.

Glenn, that's going to be my wife's job, since she's the one who insisted changing the room. :-)

I can say that on here, because she doesn't read these forums.
